Schoolboys, bus drivers skirt the rules to beat heat

News, World
It has got so hot this summer in some places in Europe that men and boys have decided to don skirts - because rules forbid shorts. Dozens of British schoolboys at the Isca Academy in Exeter have gone to class wearing girls' uniform skirts when the head teacher would not relax the dress code banning the more suitable option: shorts. In Nantes, France, some male bus drivers showed off similar feminine attire this week to protest against the bus company's "no shorts" policy, arguing that trousers were too hot during the heatwave. The bus company, Semitan, eventually gave in - saying the men could wear shorts while the dress code was being updated to make more permanent changes, according to a local newspaper. Meanwhile, the teenage boys at Isca Academy argued that it was too h...

Top 10 Best Football Managers in the World

Sport
Who are the best football managers? Managing a football team requires a diverse array of talents and a substantial knowledge of the game. As well as being tactically astute, managers should be able to work individually with players to motivate and discipline them. Their instructions need to be communicated effectively, and they must anticipate the physical and psychological condition of their players. Of special importance is a manager's ability to make intelligent substitutions and tactical changes during matches. As a prerequisite, managers need to earn the respect of their players by leading them competently. Many talented tacticians fail because they don't have the authority to lead. It takes a special kind of individual to be both an artist and a drill sergeant. The followin...

James could go west to join West at Clippers

Sport
On opposite sides of America on Monday, two seemingly unrelated events could set in motion a massive change for LeBron James and the entire National Basketball Association (NBA). In Los Angeles, Jerry West sat on a stage smiling as he was introduced as the newest addition to the Clippers. And in Cleveland, Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and general manager David Griffin released separate statements explaining how Griffin's successful three-year tenure in charge of the team's basketball operations - including three straight trips to the NBA Finals and a title last year - had come to an end. Hanging over both events is the contract of James, which comes to an end a year from now. If James, still the NBA's best player even as he enters a season in which he'll turn 33, decides to leav...

Tennis: Murray in a rut with Wimbledon imminent

Sport
Andy Murray admitted he has little chance of retaining his Wimbledon title next month, if he plays the way he did in losing to world No. 90 Jordan Thompson in the first round of the Queen's Club Championships . The five-time tournament winner admitted the shock 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 defeat was "a big blow" so close to Wimbledon. The world No. 1 said: "This tournament has given me great preparation in the past. When I have done well here, Wimbledon has tended to go pretty well, too. But if I play like that, I certainly won't win Wimbledon." Thompson, who has been on the Tour for less than four years and had never won a Tour-level grass-court match before Tuesday, was drafted in as a late lucky loser after Aljaz Bedene withdrew in the morning with an injured wrist. Murray conceded t...

Donald Trump: Republicans shrug off rolling scandals to win in Atlanta in blow to Democrats’ morale

News
A special election in Atlanta, Georgia is the latest election victory for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Mr Trump promised he would win so much, his side would be sick of it — but after the latest win, he was quick to rub his opponents' noses in the smell of defeat. The loss came despite Democrats spending $US30 million ($39.6 million) — the GOP also spent big — trying to take advantage of the Trump administration's rocky start to steal the traditionally Republican seat. While news of the rolling scandals and three live inquiries into allegations of coordination between Mr Trump's team and Russia are huge news inside the Beltway, Americans elsewhere may not be paying as much attention. The Republicans are up 4-0 in special elections since the inauguration and,
